 Pilot/Reamer designs include bits designed for medium-hard to very hard formation types, including highly abrasive sandstones. The concept behind this design is to drill a small hole and relieve formation stresses efficiently, then ream to full diameter. These bits are extremely tough, but sacrifice some penetration rate due to their extremely high cutter density. Most R-Series bits have Twin Cutters as standard, and limited junk slot volume. As we advance this design, the scope of their application will overlap in the S-Series.
